How does the senator help with the passing of a law?

A senator is part of the US Senate and gets to vote on a law, since there are 2 from each state there are 100 senators and each senator is 1 100th of the vote for passing, more than half have to vote in favor to pass the bill (law or other things ex obama care or a new amendment)
