Associative means you are group the numbers together differently with parentheses, but you are not changing the order in which they appear. So: 1 + (5 + 6) = (1 + 5) + 6 would be a good example of associative. The order stays the same, but the parenthesis groups the 5 and 6 on the left side but it groups the 1 and 5 on the right side.
