When using the vertical line test, you are looking to see if there is only one or possibly more than one value of "y" for each value of "x". Here, each value of "x" has only one "y" associated with it, so it represents a function. If you had an additional point, say, (3, 6), you would not have a function, because there would be both y=5 and y=6 associated with x=3.
