SAT Help! A bag contains 8 white marbles, 8 blue marbles, 7 red marbles , and 6 yellow marbles. what is the least number of marbles that can be drawn from the bag, so that 3 of the same color marbles will be drawn?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Does this involve probability...? If it does, then my thinking is way off. It seems to me to be fairly simple, what is the minimum number you must draw to GUARANTEE you've drawn 3 of the same color. So to GUARANTEE you've drawn 3 of the same color, even if you have the worst odds pulling marbles, you will have drawn 2 of each color, and then your next pull will be the 3rd of one of your colors. Sooooooo, since there are 4 colors..... 8 + 1 = 9ish? You can let me know if I'm way off on this hah :D That's my thought process though.

OpenStudy (3psilon):

9 is exactly right ! idk why I didn't see that before lol! Thank you!!
