is the greatest common divisor and the least common denominator the same thing?

OpenStudy (hba):

No they are NOT the same Least Common Denominator is Just like reverse of HCF ( Highest Common Factor ) but you select the least common factor instead of Highest common factor for ex: the least common denominator of 4 and 16 will be 2 , as 2 can divide both 4 and 16 and is the least since even though 4 too divides 4 and 16 but 2 < 4 so 2 is the least common denominator Least Common Multiple is popularly called the LCM means it is the lowest number which is the multiple of both the numbers given for ex : For number 12 and 16 the LCM will be 48 since 48 is a common multiple of both 12 (12x4)and 16 (16x3) and there is no number less than 48 which is a multiple of both 12 and 16 -Yahoo Answers: Source
