Litres is a measurement of volume. So to find the volume it can hold in total you need to add all their volumes together. V = x + (x + 0.5) + (x + 1) + (x + 1.5) Since all the operations are addition we can remove the brackets: V = x + x + 0.5 + x + 1 + x + 1.5 Now we can collect all the x's together: V = 4x + 0.5 + 1 + 1.5 Lastly, we will collect the numbers together: V = 4x + 3
