Can someone tell me how to solve this please? x^2-8ix-5i^2=0 It deals with imaginary numbers, so im not very sure how to solve this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first, treat it just like any other variable except that it's just a number. A straightforward solution is to apply: \[x= \frac{ -b \pm \sqrt{b^2 -4ac} }{ 2a }\] right away.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

...also i^2 = -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you might want to start with \[x^2-8ix+5=0\]

OpenStudy (azureilai):

So then, do I plug in x^2 - 8ix + 5 into the quadratic equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah. The answer shouldn't be pretty though.

OpenStudy (azureilai):

Ok thanks everybody
