The coordinates of rectangle ABCD are A(-8, 6), B(-2, 6), C(-2, 3), D(-8, 3). What are the coordinates of the point of intersection of the diagonals of the rectangle after the rectangle is reflected across the x-axis? (5, 1.5) (5, 4.5) (-5, -4.5) (-5, 1.5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 can you help me

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

First find the midpoint of segment AB

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so what is the midpoint of AB

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-5,6)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now find the midpoint of BC

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and tell me what you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0,4.5

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you should have gotten (-2,4.5)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now call the midpoint of AB point M call the midpoint of BC point N

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh i subtracted the first one instead of adding my bad

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the diagonals will cross at the point that has the x coordinate of M and the y coordinate of N So the diagonals will cross at (-5,4.5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but thats not one of the choices

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh, you have to reflect it over the x axis, so the y coordinate will flip in sign and become -4.5

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so the intersection of the diagonals is (-5,-4.5)
