What is Thoreau's central idea in Civil Disobedience?

Its been a while since I read this, but I remember my professor explaining to me that Civil Disobedience is mainly centered around the idea that people should protest their government in a civilized way, hence the title. For example, instead of starting riots and burning things, we should display our displeasure with an issue by sending letters of discontent to authorities or not paying a specific tax to show that you do not agree with it, etc. I can go into further detail if you want but I think that is pretty straight forward
