1+x^2=r^2 differentiate with respect to time, solve for dx/dt and plug in the givens compare the value you get for dx/dt with the velocity of the plane to find the car's speed...

@Algebraic! thank you for this approach. I tried solving this problem the same way, but was stuck because i thought "r" was unknown. I'm guessing you would suggest solving for r with pythagoras but can we really just assume that height=1 here?
