Alright. Now I am not in your bio class so it is hard to tell what you are sepose to know so this might be to easy or to advanced:
In cells the surface-area-to-volume ratio is very important for material transport. The general reason of this importance is reactivity. The reactivity incresse when the surface-area-to-volume incresse. a thermodynamicaly explanation/view on this is, that we say that the a high surface-area-to-volume ratio provides a strong driving froce that minimize the free energy og the system and therefore speed up the process of material transport.
Another thing about the Increased surface area is that it also can lead to biological problems like respriation
