Janine's credit card was stolen, and the thief charged a $44 meal before she reported it stolen. How much of this is Janine Responsible for paying?

OpenStudy (rob1525):

You have to find out how much the bank will cover.

it dosent say thats all the info that was given -_-

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

She is either charged $44 or $0 depending on how lenient the credit card company is. Usually, if the card is reported stolen, the charge will be $0 (if the company wants to maintain good PR)

OpenStudy (rob1525):

Well then we need to use logic. If the thief charged before she reported it then she would pay the whole amount. Guestimation ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you both :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im going to say $44

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Good point, the report comes AFTER the charge. So to the company, it would look like she made the charge, then had it stolen. But not everyone can report it stolen immediately (say she is in a place with bad cell service or has no cell phone at all and must get home to report it stolen)

OpenStudy (rob1525):

Yea, there are a lot a factors to consider like customer hist. but like jim said my reasoning is that if she didn't notifiy the bank asap its her fault.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

true, but banks may allow a certain amount of time to go by because they may think of these possibilities ahead of time she may not be able to report it immediately, but the thief may be able to use it immediately. I'm thinking the bank would have this kind of scenario thought out and would therefore allow a window of time (say 24 hours) to reverse any fraudulent charges
