Predict whether ice will expand or contract as it is heated fro -10 degree Celsius to -5 degree Celsius. Explain your reasoning.
it will expand http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/ice-thermal-properties-d_576.html
I agree with Kryten.
It's pretty typical that solids expand on heating and contract on cooling. The reason is general. You may regard each particle in the solid as trapped within a potential well created by all the other particles: |dw:1352843829073:dw| As the temperature rises, the vibrations of the particle increase in magnitude, as it has energy to climb further up the potential well wall. Since the well inevitably flattens out in the direction away from the particles nearest neighbors, and steepens towards them, it follows that the average separation increases with temperature. Hence the density goes up.
