plz can any one answer this :(....2/3 of a plot of land is garden. 1/5 of the garden is lawn . find the fraction of the plot of a land which is lawn.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If the garden is 2/3 of the land, and 1/5 of the garden is lawn, then you just need to find 1/5 of 2/3, or (2/3)/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u mean it would be like this 1/2 multiply with 2/3??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer would be 2/ 15 ?? is it correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank u soo much sir

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but sir why we multiply it why cant we add them??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because it is a fraction of a fraction if that makes sense. If you draw a picture, the garden is PART of the plot of land. The lawn is PART of the garden, not a different piece of land.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If the garden and the lawn were separate pieces, then you would add.
