I do not know what the "passage" is, but the definition of an epidemic means an outburst of disease, anger, joy, discontent... pretty much any noun... It can sometimes apply to verbs as well.... :) .. if you attach the actual passage, I will do my best to answer you fully ^_^ but for now, this is the best I can do...
