Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that causes lots of mucus to build up, in a person's air passageways, and other parts of the body. Normally, the water that's inside of our cells comes out of the cells, so that it can thin out our mucus. But when our chloride ion channels are "faulty," or not properly working, water stays inside of our cells. And if the water stays INSIDE the cells, then it can't thin out the mucus that's OUTSIDE the cells. And that's why the mucus builds up, and becomes thick. Because nothing is washing it away.
