To evaluate expressions and obtain a correct answer a person must follow the following four steps. First evaluate the information in grouping symbols, second, evaluate anything with an exponent, third, multiply and divide in order from left to right and finally add and subtract in the same order from left to right. If these steps are not followed in this order the answer will be different and therefore incorrect. For instance if a person first adds numbers before multiplying the answer will be incorrect.
