This great writer from the United States of America reported on the October Revolution led by the Bolsheviks who overthrew the czar during WWI. Who was he? What was the title of his book?

I hesitate to suggest John Reed, "Ten Days That Shook The World," only because you specified a "great" writer and Reed was just a scribbler, a hack, and no one's idea of a "great" writer. But he was a writer, and from the US, and he did report on the October Revolution, in real time, and later write that book, which became famous enough to be turned into the plonkingly sentatious movie "Reds" starring Diane Keaton and Warren Beatty back when he was considered a fine specimen of a man, to quote the luckless Mrs. Broadwell.
