If R is a reduced row row echelon form for a square matrix A, then either R has a row of zeroes or R is the identity matrix. True or False. Asking because there is a contradiction between two past exams i'm looking at.

If R is a reduced row row echelon form for a matrix A, then either R has a row of zeroes or R is the identity matrix. And also this one, only difference i have just noticed is that this one does not contain the word square.

Only a square matrix, with echelon form, and containing 1's is the identity matrix. Yes, it has to be a square matrix.
