help!!!

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

- take half of 4 and square it -then add this to both sides -write left side as perfect square -solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first step will look like x^2+2= 5?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

almost... x^2 +4x +4 = 1 +4 x^2 +4x +4 = 5 (x+2)^2 = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait i am still lost..then what's the answer? the answer book says x=-2±√5

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

well yes you still have to get "x" by itself i was showing the "completing the square" part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay! so my next step will look like x+2=√5

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then it will be x=-2±√5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah thank you everyone:)
