The sky is a sotty handkerchief is an example of: alliteration or a etaphor or personification

Metaphor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Metaphor because it is comparing the sky and handkerchief. Personification is giving an inanimate object a human-like characteristic. Ex: The stars danced playfully in the moonlit sky. We obviously know that stars can't necessarily dance. Dance is done by living objects. Alliteration is "The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words" (found on google)" Ex: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Look at all them "P"'s in the beginning of each word! :)
