The picture shows a barn door. A barn door has two parallel bars, each of length 4 feet. A support AB runs across the diagonal between the two parallel bars. The angle made by the diagonal with the parallel bar on top is 45 degrees. What is the distance BC between the two horizontal parallel bars? Can someone explain how to do this. I tried it and got it wrong on a review test.

This is because any 45-45-90 triangle will have 2 congruent legs

4 by cos 45 4 sin 45° 4 by tan 45 4 tan 45°

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

tan(angle) = opp/adj tan(45) = x/4 4*tan(45) = x x = 4*tan(45) So choice D
