OpenStudy (anonymous):

emm what is algebraic multiplicity?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are 2 types of multiplicity. An n dimensional system has n eigenvalues but they aren't all distinct. Algebraic multiplicity tells you how many times a particular eigenvalue is repeated. Geometric multiplicity tells you how many linearly independent eigenvectors exist for a particular eigenvalue. The geometric multiplicity is never larger than the algebraic multiplicity but can be smaller.
