A tugboat goes 100 miles upstream in 10 hours. The return trip downstream takes 5 hours. find the speed of the tugboat without the current and the speed of the current.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

100=R(10) Rate/speed=10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if the trip downstream takes 5hours then 100=rate*5 -> 20mph=rate without current

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first trip speed with current was 10mph. Trip without current was 20mph. That means speed of current= 10mph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Distance= Rate or speed x Time taken
