Mitosis can be divided up into the following phases: prophase, during which chromosomes can be seen condensing from diffuse chromatin; prometaphase, in which the nuclear membrane disintegrates; metaphase, during which chromosomes line up along the middle line of the cell; anaphase, characterised by movement of the chromosomes to each half of the cell and telophase - this is where new nuclear membranes form round the nuclei and a cleavage furroe appears.
