Its a way to write differently and effectively,such that it looks good to eyes and more medals can be earned :P.... with large font, different colors,inserting tables, and so on....

Latex is is a document markup language and document preparation system for the TeX typesetting program.

Many journals require you to write in LATEX format. Once you write in LATEX format. The software will itself generate an output file with automatic formatting required for a perticular journal / paper.
