whats argon

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A noble gas, the third major component, after nitrogen and oxygen, of the atmosphere, at about 1% by volume. Discovered in 1894 by Sir William Ramsay and John William Strutt, third Baron Rayleigh, by pursuing the question of why air seemed to contain a small completely non-reactive residue. At the time of its discovery, the entire column of noble gases was unsuspected. Ramsay was awarded the 1904 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of argon, and, therefore, of the entire last column of the Periodic Table. He went on to fill out the column by finding neon, krypton, and xenon. Helium was later discovered on the surface of the Sun (hence its name), and radon when radium was isolated.
