Before computers, you would have to travel far distances to get an item from one place to another. An example of a way you could get something from one place to another is by boat if it's overseas. :)

I'm pretty sure it did. I mean, I'm just going off knowledge I already know. 
You have to figure that they crossed oceans which are the biggest bodies of water in the Earth. It must have been dangerous too, think about how scary the thought of the boat sinking must have been!
