I want to write a short story for my class and use a jacket as a metaphor for a relationship. How could I make it ambiguous and still give the reader a sense it's about a relationship? I know I'm asking a lot, but this would help my mental block.

It really depends on what you want to portray the relationship as. If it was good, bad, stuffy, overwhelming. heated, etc. What would you like to say about the relationship in relation to the jacket?

There are many jackets at a store. You try on different jackets until you get the right fit. Usually when people buy new jackets they tend to wear it in excess. Maybe too often to quickly. Then the jacket starts to slowly become unhitched at the seems and other jackets look more pleasing. Eventually, we all outgrow our jackets.

Well it seems to me like you know exactly what you want to write about.
