what is the effect of suspending the cells in hypotonic hypertonic and isotonic environment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is about which way water molecules would travel across the cell membrane. If the medium outside the cell (ie it's environment) is hypertonic then water would tend to flow out. Isotonic means the same strength so there's no net movement of water into or out of the cell. I guess you can figure out hypotonic - it's the opposite of hypertonic. Basically it's whether the cell swells up or shrivels up.

diffusion of molecules occur depending on the environment. the cell shrinks in a hypertonic enviroment, swells in a hypotonic environment and remains the same in the isotonic environment. equilibrium causes this phenomenon.
