my guess...and it sounds very cruel...is that americans liked the belgians over the armenians (or just didn't care about the armenians compared to the belgians) because belgium is in western europe while armenia is in eastern europe/western asia

i think belgians were considered more similar to americans than armenians were, so that's probably why they cared about the belgian tragedy than the armenian genocide
