Why is a distribution more skewed to the left or right and symmetrical?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

A skew distribution does not have equal probabilities above and below the mean. The median and the mean do not coincide in a skew distribution. |dw:1353464701938:dw| Diagram (a) shows positive skewness where the median is less than the mean. Diagram (b) shows negative skewness where the mean is less than the median. A symmetrical distribution has equal probabilities above and below the mean and the median and the mean coincide.
