Things have their own natural frequency at which they vibrate if displaced from their rest position and released. If you exert pulses of force on a thing at its natural frequency, the amplitude of vibration of that thing will increase. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was buffeted by the wind, at its natural frequency, until the amplitude of its vibrations stretched it to breaking point.
