administrators are the people who actually run the site - the paid employees.
moderators and ambassadors are appointed by them.

I got no idea how admins are picked, prolly a more usual job interview process.

moderators are picked on a need basis, and a administrator or collective group of them vote on who they believe would suit their needs.

Ambassadors are people who welcome new users and make then feel welcome. The ambassadors are picked after they have sent in an application. That application for ambassadors is now closed. But besides the fact of that, ambassadors are the ones with the Purple A. They are able to answer any questions about the site and can help guide you to the place where you need help. Like say you needed help in a specific topic of "Computer Science" The ambassador can link you to that group!
