how do you know if a number is rational or irrational

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if a number can be rewritten as a fraction then it is rational. so like 0.5 is rational because it can be rewritten as 1/2. Pi cannot rewritten (so it is irrational) as it is infinite long.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thxs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it has dots on the side then is it rationaal or irrational example 2.887766...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pls help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the dots means it keeps going, and any decimal that keeps going and doesn't repeat itself is irrational.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it's irrational.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it always gonna be irrational?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or could it be rational like ex 0.99999...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.99999... repeats, so it would be rational.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it is irrational it has a qwith a bar on top and if its rational it just has a q?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um...I don't know what you mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like there is Q with a bar on top if it irrational , that's what i learnd but maybe it rational im not sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've never heard anything about a q...but the bar on top makes me think of numbers that repeat and keep going, such as 0.999999...instead of the "..." you could have a bar above the 9's.

OpenStudy (phi):

irrational have decimals that have no pattern to them. you get them from taking square roots, cubic roots, etc. or pi or e (special numbers)
