anyone knows about crystal field theory? Can explain to me? thanks

OpenStudy (aaronq):

for transition metals, in the free ion state (nothing bout to it) there is degeneracy (meaning they are all of equal energy) in the d orbitals (dxy, dxz, dyz, dy^2-x^2, dz^2); electron repulsion is created as ligands approach the central metal atom depending on the spatial orientation of the approach and the nature of the ligands and the nature of the metal its oxidation state, this repulsion splits the orbital into different energy categories.

this is the splitting in an octahedral field, where ligands approach directly at|dw:1353626663879:dw| all z,y,x axes.

if you a better visual representation i suggest you look this up on youtube
