If a number is randomly chosen from the set which of the following represents solution set for the inequality ?? What is the question exactly asking for? The answer choices are as follows: 1/5 .. 2/5.. 0...3/5..4/5

hartnn (hartnn):

anything else is given? which inequality ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

white set?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@hartnn oops. Set= -1,3,4,8,11 Inequality = |x-3|<7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4/5

hartnn (hartnn):

if |a| < b then a< b , a>-b so what about |x-3|<7 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my guess is that they're asking, if you randomly picked a number from -1,3,4,8,11, what's the probability that it would satisfy the inequality

hartnn (hartnn):

either u solve the inequality or you put the values of set in that equality and see how many satisfies it

hartnn (hartnn):

*inequality

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@cnknd That's exactly how i interpreted it. The answer they gave was 1/5 whereas i wrote 4/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe they're asking for what proportion of the numbers do NOT satisfy the inequality... the question seems very poorly worded

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@cnknd my thoughts exactly. yeah that might be the case. I thought i misunderstood or had forgotten a key concept or something..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh well. Just interpret it in a couple of ways and say how you're interpreting it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@scarydoor what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well there are probably only two or three things the question could be asking. So just say "if it means this, then this is the answer.." for each of the three. you know...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@scarydoor riight i gotcha. yeah we reached that conclusion
