A hydrometer is used to check the density of a liquid relative to water. It doesn't tell you how pure the liquid is.

Hydrometers have many uses, but the most common use by wine, beer, and mead makers is determining the alcohol content of a homemade beverage.

Yes, hydrometers are used for a lot of things but again, they are designed to compare the density of liquids...not the purity.
