x^2-10x+9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what's the question?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

try these possibilities in first column to get + 9 -3 x -3 -9 x -1 and see which give you -10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay i was thinking it would be (x-3) (x+3) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i guess you wanna factor it... no...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah factorise quadratics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there's only two possiblilities but only 1 of them adds to -10.... see what @cwrw238 suggested...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they both add up to 9 dont they

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-3) + (-3) = ?? (-9) + (-1) = ??? try it now...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh its -9+-1 but the answer is -10 and i thought it should be positive 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-10 is the coefficient of the middle term. they have to "add" up to this +9 is the last coefficient. they have to "multiply" up to this and so: (-9) * (-1) = +9 and (-9) + (-1) = -10 so this is it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah al right so its the second one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes... so how is it factored? x^2-10x+9 = ( )( ) ????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x-9)(x-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good work... :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:) thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yw...:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-9+-1+=10 _9*-1=9 x^2-10x+9 =(x-9)(x-1)
