OpenStudy (anonymous):

When a ball of cotton and a stone are dropped simultaneously, which one will fall first? or will they fall at the same time?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ideal conditions = they both fall at the same time, but due to resistance from air they'd change.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya if its something very light, like a feather or something, then the stone will fall first right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but only if air resistance is considered.. most of times when that question is asked.. m sure air resistance is neglected..

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

if you neglect air resistance , like in vacuum so answer is clearly that both cotton and stone are equally fall and reach equally in the same time.

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

or when we say there is air resistance so ofcourse cotton will take time.

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

ok @ShikhaDessai

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank u soooooo much @mayankdevnani i was kind of confused with 2 answers

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

welcome...sis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there are many possible conditions the cotton ball may also reach first because since you all know about air resistance and air resistance on the stone may be larger

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u mean friction due to air is more on the cotton

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

yaa

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not cotton you told about cotton ball

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

in short, she said that. ok @harsh314

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya i mean cotton ball

OpenStudy (anonymous):

their is a difference between a piece of cotton, a ball of cotton, a molecule of cotton..........

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

i know...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya u r absolutely right!!! i just forgot to add ball

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes so as per the question the cotton ball is in the context so we need to know that if the ball of cotton has a greater mass and aerodynamical shape such that the density is quite low and the pressure acting on the ball is less.....,,,,,,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm i really dont know what is aerodynamical(i'm only in the 8th)....and where pressure is concerned, i think it is the acceleretion due to gravity that matters..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you know about air resistance

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know about friction due to air

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is friction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when two things rub against each other, friction is caused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes what is resistance then.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm i dont know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

resistance means oppostion so in simple terms air resistance is the opposition of air to any moving particle.......such that it obstructs its motion.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you got somthing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so r air resistance n friction the same?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see friction and air resistance are not identical i cant explain much because it will not be clear to you .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm ohk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

understand it like this: when any body falls from through air the particles of air collide with it as when throw a ball in water then the particles of water collide with that ball ........similarly assume about air.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hence when particles collide so the motion of the ball is obstructed tnd that is the air resistance........got it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm getting it a bit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok now i understood

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mention not no problem is the always ready is the ..................good to see is the you are studying is the ,.,,,,,,,,,,,,, best of luck is the dear sis ...........

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is this "is the" thing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

F.I.R sab tv pe ata hai.......

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

hahahahaha tum bhi @harsh314

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ya i used to watch that...gopi right?

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

right!!! gopi, gulgule many more...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tumne sahi pehchana it is right is the raat ho gayi isi liye gud night is the............

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohk

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

bye...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

hmm, id say that they both fall at the same time, but rather have the potential to land at different times depending on other conditions :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so under vaccuum, both ll fall at same time eh?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the resistance offered by the air is responsible fr the increase in time fr the cotton ball?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya right...that's what i understood due to @harsh314 's explanation
