Candice is taking a group nature hike in a park. There is a $19.00 fee just to enter the park. In addition, the tour group charges $0.68 per mile they hike. She brought $44.00 with her. Which equation can be used to determine how many miles can she hike?

$19 is a fixed cost; it's not impacted by the amount she hikes. You can assign a variable, say \(x\), for the number of miles she hikes. You will multiply that by 0.68 to get her total cost for the number of miles she hikes. All of that needs to sum up and be equal to (or be less than) 44.
