I dont think thats right. It spurred huge amounts of somewhat macabre and dark artwork, mostly featuring dancing skeletons and (obviously) death. It was symbolic reference as to what the artists saw going on around them. I.e. The suffering of people with the plague and the ones locked inside the houses of those with the plague. Hope that helps.
