how do i solve 3x-1 over 5 =8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply everything by 5 so you get 3x-1=40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you need more clarification on that step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then add 1 to both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x=41

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait back to step one you said multiply everything and you only multiplied -8 by 5 to get 40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it -8 or 8 sorry and yes you multipy 3x-1/5 by five too but the fives cancel out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's -8, and so you multiply the whole 3x-l/5 by 5 but once you multiply the 5 by the 5 you get rid of the 5 that started out in the equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5(3x-1/5)=(5)(-8) ^the fives here cancel out because its 5/5 therefore its just 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh, i understand so i solved the rest of the equation and got -13, is that correct?

3x-1|dw:1353731334217:dw|
