"DNA & RNA & GENETICS" do you have any idea how big that subject is? Unless you only mean genetics on the molecular level, then you can gather the most basic concepts i suppose.

Stil think about it:
The central dogma of molecular biology. Genetics on individual level. Genetics on cell level and genetics on molecular level. Mutations. DNA profiling and analysis. Biotechnology. Genomes and evolution... the list never end. All these concepts are primus motor in order to work with genetics. Just doing "a bit of the overall" I think would be way to hard in order to see the coherence between all the minor subjects.

I too am intrigued by tutorials; however, they currently represent a direction that the admins (not me) do not currently want to take the site. The emphasis is still on tutor-student interaction, not archived educational material. That said, introduction of subsections is a terrific step in the right direction. Right now there are only subsections in the math group; however, I look forward to the day when there are subsections in the other group. If anyone wants ideas about sections for biology and chemistry...

And as for tutorials in molecular biology, I am working (time allowing) on a collection of video/screen capture tutorials on computational genetics and epigenetics and publishing them on Wordpress. I have also seen discussions of putting together an introductory biology text for high school students, published through wordpress or as a wikibook. The point is there exist platforms for collecting and distributing this stuff better suited than OpenStudy, for those actually serious about creating these resources.

The "ask a question get an answer" is the only aspect of OpenStudy about which I have strong negative feelings. Huffing and puffing on the question/answer mill does not provide knowledge; it does not help anyone and it is a strong flavour of what the site has become. It doesn't help that last year, when there were fewer people on the site, I could spend most of my time here tutoring; now I spend it trying to engage the asker/answer givers in a discussion they are really not keen to have, then warning and suspending them.

I am for user created, user curated, user discussed tutorials/classes/textbooks and other resources for two reasons:

1. They will be helpful to the askers and when they say, "Just give me the answer" we can refer them to these resources and let them help themselves. Preferably we train them to refer there first, before asking, and see if they can answer their own question before they post on the forums.

2. They will give good tutors more ways in which to be good tutors; better ways to teach; closer study of our own subjects; better ways to collaborate.

It would help both with the Gimme an Answer problem and the tutor retention problem and is a necessary step in a direction the site needs to go. Just my perspective, of course.
