A 50g bullet is fired at a speed of 600m/s from a 4 kg gun which is suspended by wires and is free to move. What is the speed of the recoil of the gun?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

use the equations of motion to find the acceleration of the bullet. Use F = ma to find the force exerted on the bullet The same force is exerted by the bullet ON the gun. Find the acceleration of the gun Use the equations of motion to find the recoil speed of the gun

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or save the trouble and use the law of conservation of momentum!.. total initial momentum = total final momentum!

OpenStudy (yanyan):

what about the speed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you think about the problem?? .. tell me why do you think the gun recoils in the first place?

OpenStudy (yanyan):

i already got the momentum... but what is asked is the speed,.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea.. now tell me what is the formula for calculating the momentum?

OpenStudy (yanyan):

mv

OpenStudy (yanyan):

the product of mass and velocity

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Use momemtum conservation...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

initial momemtum = 0 final momemtum = m1v1 + m2 v2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0 = m1v1 + m2v2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

v2 = -m1v1/m2 here -ve sign indicate the gun moving backward

OpenStudy (yanyan):

thanks!
