Factor 6x^2-11xy-10y^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here's a hint, 6x^2-11xy-10y^2 = 6x^2+4xy-15xy-10y^2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the GCF of the equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good first step to look for that first (though it's an expression not an equation), but there isn't one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You'll have to get it in the form (ax+by)(cx+dy)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you familiar with FOILing binomials?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Great. Then consider that the factors you are looking for are in the form \((ax+by)(cx+dy) = 6x^2-11xy-10y^2\) . If you FOIL (ax+by)(cx+dy) then you get \((ax+by)(cx+dy)=acx^2+adxy+bcxy+bdy^2\) Which means you need to find a,b,c,d such that ac=6 and bd=-10 and ad+bc=-11

It's easier than it looks. :-)
