Googol and googoplex Ok so i understood that a googol is 10^100.. so it is 1 and hundred zeroes.. a googoplex is 1 and googol amount of zeroes.. but for some reason m not able to comprehend this :( :(.. can someone help!!..

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

What do you think a googol is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a number 10^100 :P.. which is more than the number of sand grains that you can fit in this universe.. thats what i just read :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no.. that would be 10^90.. .. googol is more than that.. and besides 10^100 is 1 followed by 100 zeroes not 10 followed by 100 zeroes!

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

If you think a googolplex is large, you should Graham's Number: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham%27s_number It holds the record for the largest number ever used in a serious mathematical proof.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Omg.. there is absolutely nothing on that page.. that i can understand.. for every word they use.. i have to keep googling :P

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

lol! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its ok.. its a number that cannot be written even if a digit was put in a planck's volume cause there isn't so much space in the universe!.. i understood taht much :D.. !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but what i don't understand is, can't it be stored digitally??!/ i mean.. for instance to write 1 and a million zeroes.. maybe you need some paper or something.. but isn't it possible to store number digitally?!?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

what's amazing is that it is actually the result of a mathematical proof.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

yes - it can be stored but only as a representation of its form using Knuth's up-arrow notation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no.. i mean by using zeroes it must be possible.. what i am saying is.. if i have a a simple lcd display.. its possible to display a number like 1 billion.. by using scroll in it!..

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

I believe there is an algorithm that can be run to produce the N rightmost digits of this number. But there isn't enough time in Universe to be able to run this algorithm to completion in order to produce all its digits.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh.. no space.. now no time also.. brilliant :P.. why waste time on it then? :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

God.. and now m baffled.. !!! if by using whatever method you said earlier.. its possible to make a person comprehend how big that number is.. then it means.. we can actually store so much data in our brain that is not even possible to be stored even if we used the entire universe? :O :O

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

he he - we can store the "notion" of that number in its mathematical representation - but we do not actually store all its digits in our heads. otherwise I believe our heads would exploded! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea that makes sense.. lets not get into philosophy :D.. i have asked one question in physics section :D.. do look up if you got time!
