. Which property of the real numbers is illustrated by the following statement? (17 · 7) · 12 = 17 · (7 · 12) Is it Commutative property or Associative property? Thinking Commutative
You changed the grouping. That is the associative property of multiplication.
Commutative: ab = ba (change of order) Example: 2 x 3 = 3 x 2 Associative: (ab)c = a(bc) (change of grouping) Example: (2 x 3) x 4 = 2 x (3 x 4) This means that if you do what's on the left side which is first multiply 2 by three and get 6 and then multiply by 4 and get 24, that's the same as doing what's on the right side which is first multiply 3 by 4 and get 12 then multiply by 2 and get 24. You get 24 either way.
I understand a lot better now to get further answers myself..THANKS!!!
