A worker sprayed fertilizers, which stimulate the growth of native bacteria, on an oil-soaked area. Which one of the following capabilities of bacteria could have led to the above action? A. bacterial growth reduces the chances of fire due to oil spill. B. bacteria digests patroleum and help in cleaning up oil spills. C. bacteria survives the harmful effect of fertillizers.

OpenStudy (trancenova):

The key clue to finding the answer to this question is in what bacteria eat when they grow - like us they require carbon compounds to grow.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that tells me what? sorry not to good lol.

OpenStudy (trancenova):

More clues! (you tell me which answer you think is right and I'll tell you if you are correct). Okay, well you would want to get rid of the oil spill right? So you're answer isn't going to be C. Spraying fertiliser would enhance bacterial growth, now bacteria eat carbon (carbon = petroleum).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wanna go with either A, or B?

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Yup, what are your thoughts on those two?

OpenStudy (trancenova):

(Which ones do you think could be right, and why?)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well I want to go with A because you were just talking about the bacteria eating the carbon and when something eats it grows.

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Ah, sorry it's not A. While the bacteria does grow it's purpose is to eat or digest the carbon (the petroleum) - that way it helps clean up oil spills.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no wait you it also talks about digestion to so i have to look more into it then just that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for the help. :)

OpenStudy (trancenova):

no worries :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what is the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b: bacteria digests petroleum and help in cleaning up spills
