"3 units directly to the right" can be found by adding 3 to the x-coordinate of the initial point, so you must first be able to identify the initial point. That is done by ascertaining the x-coordinate and the y-coordinate. The x-coordinate is found by seeing how many units to the right or left of the y-axis (vertical line where x=0) the point is. The y-coordinate is found by seeing how many units above or below the x-axis (horizontal line where y=0) the point is.
